Why USDC?
USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin. One USDC is (roughly) one US dollar, but it moves on public blockchains — so you can receive it from a client in another country in seconds, without a bank, a payment processor, or a currency conversion fee. For freelancers who work with international clients, that removes the two biggest friction points in getting paid.
What you need
- A self-custody wallet. Install MetaMask, Rabby, or Coinbase Wallet. Write down your recovery phrase offline and never share it. Your wallet address (starting with
0x) is what clients pay to. - A stablecoin rail. USDC lives on many chains — Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain. For low fees, Base or Polygon are good defaults.
- A way to show the client what to pay. You can paste your address, but a payment link is cleaner and less error-prone.
Step 1 — Share a payment link
Instead of copying a long address, generate an EIP-681 payment link. It encodes your address, the amount, and the token, so the client's wallet pre-fills everything. Example for $50 USDC on Base:
ethereum:0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913@8453?function=transfer(address,uint256)(0xYOUR_ADDRESS,50000000)
(The trailing zeros are USDC's 6 decimals: $50 = 50_000_000.)
Step 2 — Send the invoice
Send a short note: "Please pay 50 USDC on Base to the link below." Tools like the Web3 Freelancer Kit automate this with a multi-chain income tracker.
Step 3 — Confirm and deliver
Once the client pays, you can verify the transaction on a block explorer (Basescan, Arbiscan, etc.) by pasting the tx hash. No chargebacks, no holds. Then deliver the work.
